Passion

Passion

can make me change shape.

A small seed unfurls shoots,

grows roots,

leaves, flowers and branches,

drawing on the tenderness and love

meeting me.

The heat of loving sex

rises,

letting me enter a different state,

yearned for more deeply than

earth’s first fruits with their intense taste.

Sex has power

to wipe out everything but itself,

to let two merge

until each atom is joined.

This is unlike sex that only satisfies a physical need.

It’s like mashed potatoes

originating in boxed flakes.

Neither person wants to stay.

I prefer to hold the other,

to glory in their personhood,

to share food, growth, life.
